Medical Laser Therapy

Medical Laser therapy using an MLS Laser is a completely safe, non-invasive and pain free way of managing acute and chronic conditions including:

Reducing pain, and swelling and increasing mobility in Arthritis of the hands, feet, knees, spine, and shoulder

Shoulder pain from Frozen shoulder and Rotator Cuff damage,

Tendonitis including Achilles tendonitis, tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow.

Wounds and Leg Ulcers

The laser supplies light energy directly to your cells, which encourages your body’s own healing processes, to reduce pain and inflammation and increase healing.

10 Benefits of MLS Laser Therapy

1. Anti-Inflammatory & Anti-Swelling: MLS laser stimulates vasodilation and activation of lymphatic drainage, this helps drain sore swollen areas.

2. Analgesic: it helps to block pain transmission by the nerve cells and increases production of your bodies own pain killing chemicals.

3. Accelerated Tissue Repair and Cell Growth: damaged cells are repaired faster as the MLS laser accelerates normal cellular reproduction and growth.

4. Improved Vascular Activity: the MLS laser increases the formation of new capillaries in damaged tissue, this speeds up the healing process, closes wounds quickly and reduces scar tissue.

5. Increases Metabolic Activity: the MLS laser creates higher outputs of specific enzymes, greater oxygen levels and food particle loads for blood cells.

6. Trigger Points and Acupuncture Points: it stimulates muscle trigger points and acupuncture points in a noninvasive way providing musculoskeletal pain relief.

7. Reduced Fibrous Tissue Formation (scar tissue): especially following tissue damage from cuts, scratches, burns or surgery.

8. Improves Nerve Function: Laser light can result in an improvement in nerve sensations such as numbness, nerve pain levels, and ultimately improve the function of nerves.

9. Immunoregulation: Laser emissions result in production of ATP, which is the major carrier of cell energy and the energy source for all cellular chemical reactions. This can boost production of immunoglobulins and lymphocytes.

10. Faster Wound Healing: Laser light stimulates collagen I production to replace old damaged tissue and to repair tissue injuries. It can improve post surgical healing, healing of open wounds, ulcers, and burns.

How does it work?

The MLS laser delivers two wavelengths, 808nm and 905nm in a synchronised manner. Because the stronger 905nm wavelength is nanopulsed (this means it pulses on and off rapidly), any risk of thermal damage to your tissue is removed and the laser is completely safe to use.

The 808nm wavelength targets tissue repair and regeneration and the 905nm wavelength has an analgesic effect and targets pain and inflammation.

The laser also activates vasodilation (expansion of the blood vessels) in the area it is targeting. This results in an increase in the cells’ oxygen, ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and anti-inflammatory proteins. Vasodilation also improves healing time and has a ‘wash out’ effect which helps to clear waste products and pro-inflammatory molecules from the cells and tissues.

Laser therapy also reduces the speed of the transmission of pain messages in the nerves, and helps muscles to relax.

Finally, laser can help to reduce swelling and oedema by flushing out and pushing through any fluid accumulations in the tissues.

No, laser therapy with the MLS® Laser is completely pain free. The system is totally safe to use thanks to its unique safety system. Some patients have reported that that feeling of having the head of the laser machine moved over the area of pain is soothing and similar to a relaxing massage!

How many Laser treatments will I need?

Laser treatment is a cumulative treatment which means each treatment builds upon the effects of the last. For this reason I will try and see you as regularly as possible to maintain and increase the effects from each previous treatment. The number of treatments required varies because every body is different, however, a general rule is:

– for new acute conditions between 2 and 5 sessions, 1-2x a week are recommended

– and for Chronic conditions, such as arthritis, frozen shoulder and Achilles tendonitis you may need between 3-12 sessions over the course of a few months.

Generally, I work on an initial course of 3 sessions carried out over 3 weeks and then reassess your condition and see how we need to proceed from there.

Weekly sessions are advised because the cellular effects of the laser slow down over 5-7 days and a ‘top up’ is needed to restart the healing process.

Please attend each session recommended so you can obtain optimal effect from your laser treatment.

What Can I Expect?

After an initial assessment to diagnose your condition and develop a treatment plan, we can begin your course of laser therapy. I will decide the appropriate settings for your condition and then the laser will be placed on or directly over the area of pain or injury.

Once the laser is started you will most likely only be aware of the feeling of the laser hand piece moving across your skin or in the case of laser which is not in contact with your body, you may not feel anything. This can be strange as we expect to feel something (often pain!) as a method of healing. Trust me, the laser works without causing you any discomfort at all!

Your treatment will usually be anywhere between 20 and 40 minutes long depending on your condition and the treatment protocol required.

Are there any side effects?

Very occasionally a body can ‘over react’ to the laser treatment, this is called a rebound response, and you will experience a temporary increase in stiffness and inflammation, which can last for up to 24 hours. This is rare however and if it does happen, please don’t worry. It’s just the way your body has responded to the treatment. A rebound response indicates that the treatment has caused cellular changes and a healing process is underway in your area of pain. You will most likely feel better after this rebound response than you did before the treatment. If this happens, please tell me as I may want to reduce the settings on the machine for your next treatment.

How quickly will it work?

Results are usually seen after 1-3 sessions. Remember that laser is cumulative and you’re most likely to see improvement as you proceed through your course of treatment rather than in the first week. It’s also important that you stick to any other elements of your treatment plan such as exercises, activity modification or taping to allow for the best results possible.

Your Laser Appointment

Please arrive promptly so we can make the most of your treatment time. It may be helpful for you to bring shorts or wear loose fitting clothing which can be rolled up or moved out of the way (eg a vest when treating shoulders etc). The Laser has to be used over bare skin. We usually need to treat a larger area than just the immediate point of pain so loose clothing is helpful and may be more comfortable for you.
